1.  Why have a Health Coach if I want to achieve a health goal like weight loss?  Can’t I just do my own research on the internet or talk to my doctor?

I guess the biggest question is:  How’s that working for you?  A Health Coach is a person who can hold you accountable for your goals.  Most people don’t stick to their goals unless someone holds them accountable.  You are encouraged to continue doing research on reliable sites.  You will also be asked to see your doctor first, and are encouraged to keep in touch with him/her.  A consultation with your doctor does not usually include a detailed exchange about your health goals and a regular follow-up, a nutrition and exercise plan, and an integration of mind-body resources.

2.  Why does it take 12 weeks?  I see ads that say I can lose 20 pounds in 10 days.

The ads are possibly telling the truth.  They assure you you will lose weight, but they don’t tell you in which tissues.  Most people end up losing water and muscle, not fat.

Overly speedy changes often send your body into shock.  Twelve weeks gives your body a chance to safely adapt to gradual changes, both mental and physical.  This is a much more realistic time frame for you to get the results you want.

3.  Why don’t you have a meal program?  I don’t have time to cook.

When the program is over you will still have to make your own choices at the supermarket when doing your grocery shopping.  My goal is for you to become an independent decision-maker.  If you don’t cook you will have to purchase fresh, ready-made meals.  Most people don’t know of places that make them with your health in mind, and at a reasonable cost.  Most people shop in the convenience area of the store, where there is a lot of processed food.  How many people are eating cereal for dinner because it’s easy? If a canned program works for you, great.  Wouldn’t you like to feel confident going to the grocery store and taking care of yourself, knowing what to do with it to feed your unique body?  Generalized programs do not fit all people.  You need something that’s just for you.

4.  How can you be sure I will lose 20 pounds in twelve weeks?

I can’t.  I will give you all the solutions and support you will need to reach this goal.  Only you know if you will lose that weight.  A coach does not tell you what to do.  You decide where you want to go, and we will work together to recreate the pathway that will take you there.  Your coach provides you with individualized information, and supports you with education.  That’s what makes having a coach vastly more effective.  Working together, you will understand what you, uniquely, need to do.

5.  Will you be recommending steroids?

Absolutely not.   No drugs, and no diets.  You will have a customized nutritional  program tailored to your needs.

6.  Will I have to track food points?

No.   If you do eat out, you will know what to choose.  Eating out in many instances is quite a venture, whether or not you are on a coaching program.  Food providers are usually after the bottom line, not your optimal health.  We will talk about how to make choices in a restaurant and ask the questions you need to ask in order to get the food that’s right for you.  Many people don’t think to ask about the ingredients when they’re eating out.  Here’s an example: you allergic to soy products, so you need to ask what kind of oil a battered item is fried in.  If it’s soy, you don’t want it.

7.  Will I still be able to eat junk food?

Yes, anytime you wish, provided you are willing to take the consequences.  If you want vast numbers of calories with zero nutritional value, go ahead.  You will be in the driver’s seat, not your coach.  Your coach is not a bogeywoman ready to slug you one if you make unwise food choices.  If you feel junk food is in keeping with you health goals, go for it!  Note, though, that every junk food item will bring you back closer to square one.  Healthy snacks might be a better option.  This is a program for people who are serious about securing optimal health by releasing dangerous weight.

8.  Will I have to give up desserts?

It depends on the dessert.  Most desserts involve a starchy confection.  You may want to ask yourself how that jives with an already completely balanced meal.  Perhaps you might consider some desserts that don’t involve white sugar.  Expect to make some lifestyle changes.

9.  How will I know the food you recommend is right for me?

By the results.  That’s the whole idea of having a personal Health Coach.  You will have a debrief on your medical questionnaire, and food will be part of an ongoing discussion.  You will be able to discuss what your selections have been historically.  With your input and your coach’s recommendations, we will get it right.

10.  What if I don’t like to exercise?

The human body is a marvelous machine engineered to adapt to the most amazing changes.  One of the main reasons people put on weight is a sedentary existence.  Exercise means a change for the better, affecting us in multitudes of ways.  If you plan on omitting exercise, this may not be a good time for you to embark on a weight loss program involving lifestyle changes.  You’ll be surprised what you can fit in, even if you’re bedridden or in a wheelchair.  If you are ready, call me.  Only you can decide.    Exercise gets your circulation going, you lymph flowing, makes you feel more upbeat, and enables you to handle those unexpected challenges confidently.   If you’re ready to roll, let’s go.   Contact me at www.LifestyleForLongevity.com
